Profile
  • Sunghee Pae
  • “My work redefines the urban landscapes as an ideal place. The observations I have made living in Seoul, Korea has inspired me to create an ideal landscape in response to a rapidly urbanizing city. Architectural designs in public spaces have always fascinated me. We live in a landscape in which artificial structures have been fabricated, and human desire to build ideal space is inherent.”
  • Artist Story
  • Sunghee Pae graduated from Hongik University, Seoul in Printmaking and subsequently completed her MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design, USA.

Her body of work revolves around Urban landscapes as ideal places- and the pristine appearance of my work is offset by a sense of loneliness, distancing the viewers from entering the landscapes I create. The impossibility of perfection leads me to question the ideal of what modern society strives to accomplish. Through utopic and dystopic narratives, she hopes to engage the viewer with the inherent duality that is ever present. The elements of absence in her work are meant to allow for a kind of longing from the viewer and give them the desire to complete her landscapes as ideal places for modern society.
