ABOUT THE ARTIST
-
Sovan Kumar | India
After an extended stay in his home town Bhubaneswar (ORISSA), Sovan's works are centred around the theme of globalization. He has witnessed Orissa's rapid changes within the past few years, with lots of villages emptying out and people migrating to the city. Borrowing a quote from his friend that "Globalization rests on ‘religion, economy and politics’", he was inspired Inspired to create a series based on these three core facets of development.View Profile »
With many mining areas around the region; it has started to displace communities in the process. Sovan visited the mine sites many times, and after 8pm, it is filled with trucks transporting materials from the mines to the local sea ports. He spent many hours interviewing truckers as well as the local tribal population about this phenomenon.
The Truck is both a vehicle, a carrier of change and a visual metaphor of movement. It represents culture and globalization leading to migration and immigration, the greatest instrument of economic development.
