Tanah Tumpahnya Darahku
Acrylic on canvas, 2014
For this series, each piece was done in one take - Similar to painting live. Fast. While painting these, I found myself in a non-judgmental, free and extremely vibrant place where time stood still, if only for a while. My only job then, was to observe, and cultivate, some semblance of form.
In these experiments, I was only a vessel - These paintings were a creation of themselves, aided, in part, by other elements like music, an open space, sunlight, some coffee, tea etc. - I only held the brushes, and chose which 'accidents' to keep.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
1977 Born and lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Adept at drawing at an early age, Nicholas was fortunate to have studied with several art teachers during his formative years. It was during this period he learnt the fine arts of illustration and watercolors, as well as woodcarving and batik. Also around this time, he was involved in his very first art exhibition as a youngster. After school, Nicholas worked in several industries. As a learning process, he worked as a graphic designer, photographer, sound engineer, music producer and achieved some success as a DJ, winning some awards. This also gave him the opportunity to travel around Asia as a performer. In late 2011, taking a backseat from music, he returned to art, and since then has been involved in various group and solo exhibitions, as well as delving into a three-month art residency in Q4 of 2014 (which also saw him attending a mentorship program by Wei Ling Gallery). Today, Nicholas's works can be found in galleries and in the homes of private collectors from locales such as London, New York, Germany, Italy, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia, to name a few. Taking cues from the great masters, Nicholas's style can best be described as colourful and traditional, with a contemporary flair. His work borders on semi-realism, and has been revered for his work with light and shadows. His favourite subjects are landscapes and portraits, but he occasionally challenges himself with mixed mediums and experiments with various (sometimes rudimentary) drawing tools to create different works of art. In 2016, Nicholas opened his own workspace, Satu Arts Studio & Gallery, which is conveniently located in Damansara Perdana Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya, where he paints, reads, and works on his art shows and exhibitions.View Profile »
