My Gold Glitters More Than Yours
Kanchana Gupta
Kanchana Gupta's current series of abstract paintings are lyrical expression of narratives associated with and feelings evoked by the process of “Rupturing / Tearing”. Her painting process is a combination of colour and texture and involves constantly destroying and rebuilding surfaces to invoke the feelings she senses towards the physical process of rupturing and tearing any surface such as skin or fabrics.

Kanchana Gupta | India
Kanchana Gupta is an artist of Indian origin, who lives and works in Singapore. A management professional by education and training, Kanchana went to pursue art after 11 years in various Indian and multinational corporations. She completed a Diploma in Fine Arts from LASALLE College of Arts in 2010 and has since shown in various venues and galleries.View Profile »
Her first solo exhibition is an installation titled “Identity II” that explores markers of gender identity, social constructs and rituals for women in India, with specific reference to marriage. Vermillion powder (red pigment adorned by married Indian women on their forehead and the strongest symbol of marriage) is the main material used in her installations where she also often displaces and subverts meaning and usage of various symbols.
In 2012, she began working on multiple series of abstract paintings. Her fascination with abstraction stems from her observation of how it refers only to the invisible inner state or simply to itself. The process of many cycles of rupturing and tearing of the surfaces through heat and fire in her paintings explores irreversible repair in the emotional, physical and psychological realms. These form an almost lyrical expression, a meditative energetic installation that allows viewers to connect with and sense the emotions behind the dynamic surfaces created by a both violent and poetic process.
Her works are in private collections in Singapore, Australia, Indonesia and India.
