ABOUT THE ARTIST
-
San Minn | Myanmar
San Minn was born in 1951 in Yangon where he studied painting under some of Myanmar's most noted art academics including U Nyunt Tin, U Ba Lon Lay, U Lun Gwye, U Thu Kha and U Nann Waii.
San Minn has always explored the relationship between artistic practice and political observation, and has quietly produced paintings and more recently, installations centred on corrupt authoritarian practices as well as social vices. A consistent presence in modern art practice for more than three decades, San Minn has stressed that his practice has been motivated by his liberal manifold curiosity – about the organisation of his social environment. His works convey a narrative that reflects examples of the harsh realities of life after colonialism.
A founder of Gangaw Village and Inya Gallery, both artist operatives, he has been an important supporter of modern art development in Yangon, organising and exhibiting in more than 100 shows.
Internationally ,he has exhibited at ‘Omnibus’, Gallery Voice, Kyoto (1995), “Oriental Curtain”, Cologne and Helsinki (1999 and 2001), “The End of Growth”, Heinrich Boll Foundation, Bangkok (2001), “Myanmar Contemporary Art”, Chiangmai University, Chiangmai, and “Freedom in Blossom”, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (2012). He was artist-in-residence at NIFKA, Helsinki (2006).
