ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kukoku Tamura | Japan
Kukoku Tamura (b. 1935) is a Japanese artist specialising in sumi (Japanese ink wash) paintings. The artist was born into a family business of dyeing traditional kimonos, where he was first acquainted with colours and pigments. Kukoku went on to pursue his artistic inclinations and started off his artistic career as an abstract calligrapher.View Profile »
Kukoku Tamura’s intricate fusion of painting and calligraphy produce many captivating symbolic elements in his artworks that confound and intrigue the viewer. Using sumi as a primary medium, dynamic calligraphy brush strokes are prominently displayed in Kukoku’s artworks, distinguishing his work from others. Blank spaces are also a commonality in the artist’s work. Assisted by Masashi Ozaki, a well-known printmaker in Japan, Kukoku has notably dedicated much of his time to lithography, a method used in his paintings.
The works by Kukoku Tamura are part of a special collection of exquisite art prints titled Limited Edition 88 by art gallery Kato Art Duo.
