Meguru Yamaguchi | Japan
Meguru Yamaguchi (b.1984)in Shibuya, the epicentre of Tokyo street culture. Growing up with his parents who are both fashion designers, he was continuously fed a healthy dosage of arts and influenced by various art works such as Ukiyo-e and impressionist paintings.View Profile »
At the age of 7, he started learning the technique of European art, U.S. based pop art culture and graffiti from the likes of Van Gogh, Jean Michel Basquiat and Warhol. These mixed historical art techniques made him create dynamic paintings exploding with colors. Using what he calls a “cut-and-paste” technique, Yamaguchi samples elements of painting, collage acrylics and spray paint to create works “reminiscent of Hip-Hop samplings from the 70s.” This technique also comes from the characteristic of his hometown Tokyo, where diverse cultures influence each other, creating a new culture by entangling the two.
As impressionists painted their surroundings such as their houses and families, Yamaguchi’s recent portraits are depictions of his friends on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites. The online medium is the current social movement for him, explaining why he is named the “Digital Impressionist and Urban Landscape painter”.
